Perfume names such as Origan of François Coty, Bal à Versailles of Jean Desprez or Detchema of Révillon evoke the nostalgic days of the earliest to mid-20th century. Those great and feminine perfumes are unfortunately either difficult to find or do not exist any longer except as vintage perfumes brought down from some grand-mother's attic.

ECUME D'ARCACHON

Arcachon is a coastal resort located on a basin off the Atlantic coast, about 30 miles south of Bordeaux.

 

It is there in 1930 that Mr Jean Bourdier, herbalist and perfumer, composed  a unique fragrance to celebrate the then highly popular town, attended by many artists and celebrities of the 'Belle Epoque'. A family secret revived by his grandchildren, Valérie and Dominique.

 

With its slogan, ''the basin is a world, Ecume is its perfume'', you will discover a fresh note of iodine, developing in a chord of citrus, followed by marine gorse and oakmoss.

 

Ecume d'Arcachon is a fresh eau de parfum - with the smell of the ocean - for women and men alike and can be worn at anytime on any occasion.

BAL A VERSAILLES (the real one!)
From Jean Desprez; created in 1962 to evoke nobility, aristocracy and as a memory of the unique Versailles bals opened by the King and the Queen ; Its composition is a secret but this is a perfume from the amber floral and spicy family with notes of ambergris, vanilla and pepper.
It is the ROYAL perfume for the connoisseur and collector of fine and rare perfume (read Les Parfums d'Isabelle's blog to discover BAL A VERSAILLES).

CUIR DE RUSSIE
Although the leather notes of this fragrance have been made popular by Chanel thanks to her perfumer, Ernest Beaux, who was originally Russian and fled Russia during the Bolchevik revolution, the legendary 'cuir de Russie' has been around since the 19th century.
 
According to the legend, during the tsars era, one of the Russian horsemen known as 'the Cossacks' decided to rub his leather boots against birch bark in order to make them more waterproof. A unique perfumed scent floated in the air and the Cossacks adopted it.
 
On a more modern note, 'Cuir de Russie' reminds one of a brand new high quality leather bag or of the interior of an old Rolls Royce. There have been many creations of 'Cuir de Russie' since Chanel, with personal touch from perfumers being given to the 'floral heart' (carnation, orris, jasmine, rose). However the leather base notes of Cuir de Russie blended with birch, juniper, tobacco and cedarwood are always present.
